Position title: Indigenous Science Reporting Lead for Ice and Fire podcast

Sol Creative LLC is hiring an Indigenous Science Reporting Lead to direct an episode of Ice and Fire podcast that focuses on reporting connections between permafrost thaw and Traditional Ecological Knowledge/Indigenous Science.

The podcast episode can be directed between September-December 2024, with an anticipated time commitment of 10 hours allotted to research, interview, write, edit, and record a podcast episode script.
Compensation: $500/episode, paid with grant support from the Institute for Journalism & Natural Resources.
This contract offer is for direction of one episode, but if future funding and opportunities exist, the contract may be extended to direct future podcast episodes.
The role includes:
Pre-production

Research connections between permafrost thaw and Traditional Ecological Knowledge/Indigenous Science in Alaska’s Arctic and Subarctic regions

Conduct or assist with related permafrost thaw interviews, which will be recorded for audio publication

Write or assist with writing a podcast episode script
Production

Assist with editing the written script to ensure a balance between accuracy, respect of Indigenous Science, and narrative arc are being attained

Provide a listen-through of the audio episode draft and offer feedback for improvement before the episode is published
Post-production

Offer analysis and advice for future scripts/episodes with respect for Indigenous Science
Responsibilities:

Find the right balance between scientific accuracy, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and storytelling approach while writing a podcast script

Continue the season’s theme of reporting on permafrost thaw in Alaska, with an Indigenous Science angle

Communicate constructively with interviewees, editors, the producer, and other collaborators in an honest, transparent, fair, and kind manner – utilize a critical yet respectful approach to work and communication

Find concise and clear phrasing for technical or scientific descriptions during editing for audience clarity

Approach Traditional Ecological Knowledge/Indigenous Science as equally valuable to scientific research; maintain an approach to sharing this information that gives Indigenous people value, power, and as much sovereignty as requested or possible

Manage own work schedule, limit editing hours to an acceptable amount with consideration of pay structure constraints; communicate with the podcast director if the pay/time allotted does not allow for the highest quality of work output
Ideal candidate background:

Experience with reporting or journalism, audio experience is useful but not required

Experience writing and editing using a journalistic approach

Values balance between Indigenous and quantitative approaches to ecological science

Detail-oriented editing of written or audio pieces

Has ability to manage time in an efficient manner

Communicates with collaborators in a kind, constructive manner
